Matthew 22:15-22

Today's Memorial Day means a lot of things: the end of the school year, the beginning of summer, the opening of beaches and swimming pools, picnics, cook-outs, and graduation celebrations. And a day off from work. But it's origins are about remembering the cost of being "one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all."
As with the first Memorial Day, a nationwide day of remembrance following the Civil War, we are a nation marked by deep division that runs through the halls of Congress and into our everyday lives. Many of us have written others off and been written off ourselves because the atmosphere of public discourse has become a minefield. In an attempt to cocoon themselves from all the discord, many have apparently retreated to the refuge of binge-watching old westerns, Game of Thrones, or the overflow of HGTV home makeover shows, anything to get away from the acrimony, venom, and division of contemporary American reality.
But, instead of simply dismissing others with whom we may disagree, our critical role includes both grace and truth. It seems like a good time to build bridges with others rather than score points at their expense. Memorial Day reminds us that the cost of division is very high. Our calling, as Christ-followers and citizens of the United States, is to help fulfill the high national purpose of securing liberty and justice not only for people like us, whoever the “us” happens to be. We are seeking liberty and justice for all.
